The facility, dubbed the Centre for Intelligent Asset Management (CIAM), will be located at the Glasgow-based university. Its aim is to improve availability and reduce maintenance of offshore wind farms.

It follows a similar plans by the three partners to create the £2.35 million Centre for Advanced Condition Monitoring, which will work alongside CIAM.

Professor Jim McDonald, Principal of the University of Strathclyde, said: "Today’s announcement reflects Scotland’s position as a global leader in energy research and technology, and is the latest chapter in Glasgow’s renewables success story."

This is the second offshore training centre to launch in the UK in two weeks. Last week, The Catapult Centre, a new research and development centre wasset up in the UK to focus on technologies applicable to offshore wind, as well as wave and tidal power.

The centre is run by a consortium of the Carbon Trust, National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) and Ocean Energy Innovation.
