South Korea plans 2GW offshore project for 2019

KOREA: The South Korean government has provided an update on its $9 billion plan to develop offshore wind.

Last year, it said it wanted to develop 2.5GW of projects by 2019. This would have included a 100MW wind farm by 2013 and a 900MW project by 2016.

According to reports, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy has now shifted the timing and capacity of these projects.

It is now aiming for:

  • 100MW test project in 2014
  • 400MW project in 2016
  • 2GW project by 2019

The government said Korea Electric Power Corp would be leading the development of the projects.

Eight suppliers will be involved including Doosan Heavy Industries, Hyundai, and Daewoo.

However, out of these only Doosan has an offshore turbine although this is yet to be deployed in the water.

While Daewoo has expressed an interest in acquiring German offshore turbine manufacturer and developer Bard.

South Korea does not have any offshore wind farms, although Doosan is currently supplying a 60MW project off Jeju island in the south of the country.
