Vestas and Dong Energy sign 7MW offshore turbine deal

DENMARK: Vestas and Dong Energy have signed a cooperation agreement confirming the testing of a V164 7MW offshore wind turbine in the Kattegat Sea off the Danish town of Frederikshavn.

Vestas V164 7MW turbine...testing deal agreed
The giant turbine has been designed by Vestas as a dedicated offshore machine for deployment specifically in harsh conditions at sea.

The turbine is scheduled for installation in 2013 in 15-20 metres of water at Dong Energy's demonstration site 4.5km offshore, where the company has permission to install a total of six turbines.

As part of the demonstration Dong Energy and Vestas will co-operate on technical due diligence.

"New and more efficient turbines are a crucial part of the efforts to reduce the construction costs for offshore wind farms," according to Anders Eldrup, CEO of Dong Energy.

Ditlev Engel, CEO of Vestas Wind Systems, said: "The test installation will provide Dong Energy with the most detailed insight into the turbine, and we look forward to this opportunity to provide Dong with the confidence it requires to invest in the turbine for commercial projects further down the line".

Dong could potentially become the first customer to acquire next-generation Vestas turbines for future offshore wind farm projects in the North Sea.
