The Offshore Wind Cost Reduction task force, which was launched by energy minister Charles Hendry, is to be chaired by Renewable UK chairman Andrew Jamieson.
An Arup study for the government in June put the cost of electricity from offshore wind in 2010 in the range of £196/MWh to £117/MWh, falling to an estimated £175/MWh to 104/MWh by 2020.
The task force forms part of the British government’s Renewable Energy Roadmap and will outline how it plans to reduce costs to £100/MWh by 2020.
Among the companies and organisations represented on the group are Gamesa, Alstom, Technip, Siemens, Garrad Hassan, Vestas, Dong Energy and Centrica.
Speaking at the Offshore Wind Developers Forum this week, Hendry said the task force would spearhead work to drive down the cost of Britain’s offshore wind ambitions.
He said: "It will provide the strong leadership and vision required to grow our offshore wind sector."
