EC calls for next generation turbine research

EUROPE: Proposals to develop components for next generation offshore turbines have been requested by the European Wind Energy Technology Platform (TP Wind) in association with EWEA.

The call was issued under the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) last week. Funding, which comes from the European Commission, will be made available for the research.

TP Wind said a proposal could include a 90-metre turbine blade and could offer a weight reduction of about 40% compared with standard designs.

Research proposals should encourage the active participation of industrial partners, including end users and those involved in industrial development in harsh environments such as offshore wind.

Compliance with environmental regulations will be assessed with special emphasis on the recyclability of the blades.

The call deadline for pre-proposals is 8 November 2011.
