The base, at Cuxhaven on the mouth of the Elbe, north of Hamburg and Bremerhaven, has been chosen because it is only four hours sailing time from wind farms in the German Bight.

The company, which has worked on offshore projects including Alpha Ventus, Thanet and Burbo Bank, chose the site with German partner Offshore Marine Services.

The facility will have 12,000 square metres of quayside land and a water depth of 8 metres.

The initial phase of the base development will include covered and uncovered storage for components and spares and a bespoke crew vessel transfer system.

Stephen Bolton, director of operations and maintenance, said: "The intention at Cuxport is to develop a world-class operations-and-maintenance facilities using bespoke marine-management software, new-build vessels and maintenance-and-repair facilities for pro-active sub-sea maintenance operations."

Offshore Marine Management will also expand its German headquarters in the city of Bremen citing its "long-term commitment" to German offshore wind power.
