Greece plans its biggest ever wind project

GREECE: Work could soon start on Greece's largest wind power plant to date, a 522MW facility developed by Acciona Energiaki.

The project is located in the Vermio mountains, on the border of Central and Western Macedonia, in northern Greece.

It has received the production licence and is now waiting for the final environmental approval. This should come through by the end of the year and, if all goes to plan, the 174 Acciona 3MW turbines will start commercial operation in 2014.

Importantly, the local population is said to be fully behind the project and is lobbying the central authorities to speed up the administrative process.

Acciona Energiaki has 50MW turning in Greece and a further 70MW fully licenced and ready to start construction early next year.

Greece's current operating capacity stands at 1334MW.
