Sinovel vice-president Tao Gang, said the SL6000, independently developed by Sinovel, is the largest wind turbine in China. The turbine may be applied in onshore, offshore and inter-tidal wind farms.
The turbine has 128 metre diameter blades blades. It has been tested at -45 degrees Celsius, and a wind speed of 62.5 metres per second.
Tao said the turbine adopts parallel axes gear drive and mouse cage asynchronous motor technology. It also has the low-voltage ride-through capacity, a necessity for installation in Chinese wind farms.
The SL6000 has a self-maintenance system, allowing the replacement of the gearbox, generator, and blades without external hoists.
Sinovel is the earliest in China to launch scaled commercialized operation of 1.5MW and 3MW turbines. Last October, it produced the country’s first 5MW prototype.
With the progress in offshore wind power development, large-capacity turbines have become inevitable trends in the sector, said Tao.
Tao said "With 5MW and 6MW turbines, we will exert greater efforts to tap the overseas market and have overseas business account for a considerably large proportion of our business."
According to international consulting firm BTM, Sinovel replaced GE to be world’s second largest turbine maker, after Vestas. It occupied 11.1 percent of the world market share by the end of 2010.
