The Occupational Safety and Heath Administration (OSHA), which comes under the US Department of Labor, has cited Vestas for "one wilful and 23 serious safety and health violations" following an inspection of the wind turbine manufacturing plant.
OSHA said the inspection was initiated following an accident in November last year that resulted in a worker undergoing the partial amputation of two fingers.
It said the ‘wilful violation’ concerned the "deliberate removal of support equipment while welding sections of the wind towers together, which caused the sections to slide and resulted in the amputation injury."
Additionally, a worker died at the factory in October last year when he was crushed against a flatbed train car by a forklift.
OSHA said Vestas and Transportation Technology Services, who the employed the man, had been issued serious citations in the aftermath of the accident.
