The project, which is located 55km off the north-west German coast, will use 89 Siemens 3.6MW turbines. Dong said it is investing €1.25 billion in developing the wind farm.

Construction of the project is set to start in 2013 with the first turbine expected to come online in 2014. Dong said it has a 13-year fixed price agreement for energy produced on the wind farm.

Dong is yet to make a decision on the neighbouring 480MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 project.

The two wind farms were initially jointly-owned by Dong and PNE Wind. Dong acquired PNE’s 50% share in December 2009. As part of the deal, PNE agreed to act as the service provider.
