The centre, which is located in Charlestown, Massachusetts will test commercial-sized wind turbine blades, including those longer than 50 metres. At the moment this can only be done overseas. The facility is due to open in March, according to reports.
It was jointly constructed by the US energy department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.
The US government pledged $50.5 million funding for offshore wind projects earlier this week.
Massachusetts is among the ten East Coast states which, with interior secretary Ken Salazar created the Atlantic Offshore Wind Energy Consortium to promote wind energy on the outer continental shelf.
