The initiative is set to be unveiled by energy minister Charles Hendry. The aim will be to give communities a share of the profits generated by wind farms, with the money used to offset local taxes or electricity bills
Hendry said the new legislation would improve the relationship between communities and wind developers. It would show local people what could be gained from having a wind project, rather than what could be lost.
In response, a number of anti-wind groups have accused the government of planning to ‘offer bribes’ to secure new wind farms.
