Maryland builds interest in offshore development

UNITED STATES: Eight companies have expressed an interest in bidding for the right to build a 300-turbine development off the coast of Maryland.

The offshore wind development would be in tracts of ocean between 9 and 23 miles from the coast of the state. Eight companies have submitted expressions of interest for the lease of the project.

These are: RES America Developments, Iberdrola, Seawind Renewable Energy, Fishermen's Energy, NRG Bluewater Wind, Energy Management (Cape Wind's parent company), Orisol Energy and Maryland Offshore LLC.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) issued a call in November for ‘Requests for Interest’ and public comment. The deadline for this was January 10.

In June interior secretary Ken Salazar and 10 East Coast states created the Atlantic Offshore Wind Energy Consortium to promote development on the US outer continental shelf.
