Under the deal, Siemens will supply two of its upcoming 6MW direct-drive turbines and one modified SWT-107 3.6MW turbine for development at Dong Energy’s Avedore Holme test site.
Dong Energy is funding the project. The DKK450 million does not include the turbines.
Siemens’ 6MW direct-drive offshore turbine is arguably one of the most eagerly awaited product launches of the year.
This is largely down to the ongoing success of the 3.6MW turbine, which is considered one of the most reliable on the market. Developments to use the turbine include the upcoming 468MW Cape Wind and 288MW DanTysk projects, on the US and German coasts respectively.
In a statement, Dong said the third turbine would be a modified version of the SWT-3.6 120 turbine, which will be used at the company’s upcoming Anholt project.
One target market for the 6MW turbine is the UK’s 33GW Round 3 offshore development phase. However, Dong is not involved in any of the Round 3 projects.
Siemens is also set to manufacture the 6MW turbine in the UK.
