Duke plans to build 56 turbines per phase across 8,000 acres on the Manistee-Benzie county line, Interlochen Public Radio (IPR) reported. The company has already leased more than 6,000 acres.
Frankfort lies on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, about 150 miles from Grand Rapids.
Michigan ranks 17th out of the states for its wind potential, with 59 GW possible. However, the state ranks 26th by wind capacity, with 143MW installed.
It only has about 500MW of wind power projects under development.
The state’s renewable energy standard requires utilities to generate 10% of their electricity from renewable power and energy efficiency by 2015, according to the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency.
