Windwire: PPC boosts wind to replace old lignite

GREECE: Greece's largest electricity utility, the state-controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC), is upping its wind energy holdings as part of a strategy to replace its old lignite power plants with cleaner generation.

In early September, the board approved the purchase by its wholly owned subsidiary PPC Renewables of six projects from local developer BCI. Three, with a combined capacity of 24.65MW, are already operating, while the remaining 48MW is under development. PPC said it would pay up to EUR43.4 million but says the final cost will not be known until financial and legal due diligence is completed. To date, PPC Renewables has 61.46MW of operating wind power capacity and 32.35MW under construction.
