The wind turbines will be installed on the islands of Chios, Lesvos and Limnos in the northern Aegean. The project entails the interconnection of the islands with the mainland (Windpower Monthly, June 2006). Rokas has 217.3MW of operating wind power capacity to date, of which 58MW is under construction and 1.6GW is under development. RAE is trying to speed up licensing to clear a backlog of about 40GW of applications for renewable energy projects as Greece shifts away from lignite-powered stations.

GREECE: The Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) has awarded initial production licences for 706MW of wind capacity to Rokas Renewables, a subsidiary of Spain's Iberdrola.
