845MW Shepherds Flat receives partial loan guarantee

UNITED STATES: The US Department of Energy (DOE) has offered a partial guarantee on a $1.3bn loan to finance the 845MW Shepherds Flat project in Oregon.

The DOE said the cash is expected to come from a group of institutional developers and commercial banks including Citi, RBS Securities and West LB.

The project is being built by Caithness Energy, with backing from GE Energy Financial Services, and is expected to come online in 2012. It is the largest wind farm to be built in the US.

The finished wind farm will use 338 GE 2.5MW turbines. According to Caithness, the project will provide 400 construction jobs and 35 permanent positions on-site.

Earlier this year the project was mired in controversy. There were allegations that Caithness had offered Oregonians living close to the development site "hush money" in return for not protesting about potential noise from the turbines.
