Wind Wire: Jobs boost from proposed factory

SCOTLAND: Gamesa is in talks with the Scottish government about opening a manufacturing base in the country.

This week Scottish first minister Alex Salmond met Jose Maria Ugusquiza, a member of the Gamesa board, in Bilbao. According to reports, Gamesa is looking at locations including the Highlands and Dundee. Speaking about the meeting, Salmond says: "One of our key targets is to get that manufacturing component. Talks are at an advanced stage and (Gamesa) will be coming to Scotland in two weeks and looking at a number of key sites." Scotland's offshore sector could provide the country with as many as 48,000 direct or related jobs, according to a study by consultancy IPA Energy + Water Economics. Today, 463 people are directly employed in the sector.
