University of Maryland signs wind energy PPA

UNITED STATES: A 55MW West Virginia wind farm has secured power purchase agreements with the University of Maryland and the Maryland state government.

US Wind Force will sell 33% of the power from the Pinnacle Wind Farm to the university, and 67% to the state’s Department of General Services.

Both organisations have agreed to 20-year contracts.

The 23-turbine wind farm is planned for Green Mountain, in Mineral County, West Virginia, near the Maryland border.

Six of the turbines will be located on the property of paper manufacturer NewPage Corporation, which is a partner on the project.

Construction is estimated to cost $131 million.

West Virginia’s wind capacity stood at 330MW in July 2010, and the state has had no new installations since 2008.

US Wind Force, a privately held company, develops projects through a joint development arrangement with California-based Edison Mission Group.

Edison Mission Group’s parent company, Edison International, has a portfolio of about 1.8GW of wind, either in operation or under construction.
