The announcement was made by Li Jianhua, the secretary of the Communist Party Committee of Jiuquan City, northwest China’s Gansu Province, in Jiuquan.
The first stage project of the Jiuquan Wind Farm is scheduled to be 5.16GW in installed capacity.
On September 14, this first stage project broke the l5GW barrier, reaching 5.018GW in installed capacity.
According to China’s plan, the Jiuquan Wind Farm first stage project will have an installed capacity of 5.16GW. In 2015, the wind farm will have an installed capacity of 12.71GW.
"Now, wind farms largely use 1.5MW turbines. So, we need to install another 94 wind turbines," said Wu Shengxue, deputy director of Jiuquan Municipal Development and Reform Committee.
These days, a "white forest" of turbines has lined the Hexi Corridor, the ancient Chinese Silk Road, in Jiuquan, making it the world’s largest clean energy production base.
The Jiuquan Wind Farm, China’s first 10GW-level wind power project, went into construction on August 8, 2009. By the end of 2009, the wind farm had 2GW turbines installed.
Since May this year, construction of the wind farm went into the peak season with a daily installation-rate of 30MW.
Driven by the robust wind farm construction, the wind power equipment manufacturing business has boosted the city's economy.
The Jiuquan wind power equipment manufacturing park is home to 29 companies. They include China’s top three wind turbine producers, Sinovel, Goldwind and Dongfang Electric. They also include China’s top three wind blade producers, Sinoma, Zhongfu Lianzhong and Zhonghang Huiteng.
The 750kv power transmission line, a supporting project for the Jiuquan Wind Farm linking Guazhou and Yongdeng in Gansu, is under construction and will be completed in October.
"When the power transmission line is completed, it will greatly alleviate the pressure of sending Jiuquan’s wind power to users in other places," said Liu Shibin, manager of State Grid Gansu Jiuquan ultra-high power transmission company.
