The project, which is the longest ultra high-voltage power transmission line in China, is expected to complete before the end of 2010. China’s lack of transmission capacity stands in stark contrast to its ambition to not only construct large numbers of wind farms but also integrate that capacity into what it refers to as big power grids.To meet that challenge, the State Grid Corporation of China last March began construction of a 750 kV transmission line connecting Lanzou and Guazhou by way of Jiuquan, along the Hexi Corridor in north-west China.
The project is built as a crucial supporting facility for China’s first 10GW level wind power base in Jiuquan, Gansu Province. When put into operation, it will help ensure sending wind power and solar power from northwest China to other regions in the country.
The double-loop Hexi Corridor 750kV transmission project, 1,742km long when converted into single loop, has reached the point of setting up transmission lines.
Among the total of 2,900 iron towers, 2,780 have been erected. Construction of the three transformer substations has reached the latter stages.
Gong Zhengjun, assistant general manager of Gansu Electric Power Corporation under State Grid said most civil engineering work was complete.
The project was approved by National Development and Reform Commission in March this year, with a total investment of CNY8.48 billion.
The power transmission line starts from Yongdeng County in the east of Gansu Province, and goes westward through Wuwei, Jinchang, Zhangye, Jiuquan, Jiayuguan, and ends at Guazhou County in the west of Gansu.
