Wind Wire: Developer regroups after setback

CANADA: After failing to win a contract in BC Hydro's recently completed call for power, and with future purchase plans in British Columbia still unclear, the developer of the West Coast province's only offshore wind project is considering its future direction. Vancouver-based NaiKun Wind Energy Group has launched a review of its strategic alternatives, which range from continuing to develop its 396MW offshore proposal to selling the company's interests in the project.

"We continue to believe that there are significant opportunities presented by the NaiKun wind project and, with this in mind, the board would like to fully explore all options available to optimise shareholder value," says board chair Philip Hughes. NaiKun wants to build the project in the Hecate Strait, between British Columbia's mainland and Haida Gwaii, an archipelago of islands off the province's north-west coast.
