Wind Wire: Yumen plans huge home-grown project

CHINA: A giant 500MW wind farm using only Chinese-made turbines is planned for Yumen City, in Gansu, China's north-west province. Gao Shengwen, director of the Yumen Municipal Development and Reform Committee, says that constructing such a wind farm will help promote Chinese-made wind turbines to the market.

The project requires a total investment of CNY 5 billion ($0.74 billion) and is undergoing examination by the authorities. Gao says the planned wind farm will use 2MW, 2.5MW, 3MW and 5MW turbines, with 2.5MW and 3MW units likely to dominate. Yumen City is one of China's six 1GW-level wind farm bases in the country. By the end of May, the city had already surpassed 1GW.
