Wind Wire: President uses 50MW as growth platform

COSTA RICA: The 50MW Guanacaste wind project was officially inaugurated in Costa Rica, following completion late last year.

The project uses 55 Enercon 900kW direct-drive wind turbines and was jointly developed by Germany's Juwi, France's GDF Suez Group, and local company BC y Asociados. Costa Rica's president, Oscar Arias, headlined the ceremony and used it to emphasise the country's goal to eventually derive 100% of its power from renewables. "Costa Rica can only (call itself a) developed country if it ... guarantees its population the access to sufficient and affordable clean energy," says Arias.
