Cannon currently has around 1GW of projects in the pipeline in Baja California. First phase construction of the first project, Aubanel, will be completed over the next 12 months.
Eventually Cannon aim for the Aubanel project's capacity to be around 500MW while the whole Baja California project will stretch over 140 square miles.
Cannon has been developing plans for the Mexican region. Last year Gary Hardke from Cannon a veteran of the Californian wind industry spoke to Windpower Monthly about wind projects and how power could be send to across the border to California.
He said: "Instead of 800 miles, it's only 100 miles to San Diego [in California]. So, it's a fraction of the distance. The wind resource is at least as good and probably a lot better."
Speaking about the deal Dirk Matthys, Gamesa's CEO in North America said: "Cannon Power Group is one of the most experienced wind project developers in the renewable energy market, so we are very pleased to collaborate with them on this project. This exciting new relationship will further strengthen Gamesa's leadership in the Mexican market where we already have a substantial presence.
"This will be a win-win for Mexico and the United States. We envision this as a major cross-border project that can stimulate the region's economy and provide enough clean energy for over 250,000 households."
