Operational Improvements: Making Wind Power More Competitive

Gerrud Wallaert is Head of Asset Planning of E.ON Climate & Renewables, which manages all large-scale renewable generation activities of the E.ON Group world-wide. In his role, Gerrud oversees the O&M and Parts Strategy, O&M Process, Budgeting and KPI oversight, and Risk Management for E.ON’s global onshore and offshore wind portfolio.

After earning a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Louisiana Tech University, Gerrud started his professional career in 2001 with Entergy Services, Inc. as a System Operator ensuring the reliability of the transmission system.

Gerrud joined Southwest Power Pool in 2002 as an Operations Engineer and transitioned to the position of Senior Regulatory and Policy Engineering in 2006. While at Southwest Power Pool, he supported the company and its members in State and Federal regulatory filings, policy research concerning tariff and electric market rules, and other regulatory topics.

With the foundation of electric utility experience, Gerrud entered into the renewables sector with Acciona Energy in 2009 as Manager, System Operations Center with responsibilities including the 24 / 7 remote operations of over 700 MWs of wind generation in the US, Regulatory Compli-ance, and SCADA Engineering. In 2011, he transitioned to E.ON Climate and Renewables NA where he ultimately obtained the role of Vice President, Regional Operations. In this role, he was responsible for five wind generation assets in the areas of safety, strategy, operations manage-ment, personal, and budgets  and served on a leadership team with responsibilities of over 2,700 MWs of wind power generation in North America. He was appointed his current position in 2013.

Comparison Of State Of The Art SCADA And High Sampled Data Condition Monitoring Techniques

Marc Hilbert received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in Mechatronic Engineering in the Dresden Technical University, Germany, in 2009. During that time he collaborated in projects of human condition monitoring using EEG signals and electron accelerators.

From 2009 to 2011, he was with the System Department Operation and Control, Nordex Energy GmbH, as a development engineer. While there, he was involved in the design of Condition Monitoring Systems and Automation of large scale wind turbines. Since 2011 he is a Ph.D. candidate at the RWTH Aachen University, Germany at the Institute for Mining and Metallurgy Machinery (IMR).

His research is related to monitoring and diagnostics of heavy machinery as well as big data analysis. He frequently is involved in  R&D projects for the heavy machinery industry.

David Farrell has over 25 years experience in the electricity industry having held senior management positions within ESB Group including  Manager Regulatory Affairs,Head of  Corporate Strategy and General Manager for Synergen Power Limited.

His professional background is as a mechanical engineer and spent the initial part of his career in operations and maintenance management position in conventional power stations.

David has been working in the wind sector with ESB over the past 5 years with responsibility for ESB existing wind portfolio and putting in place the capability to manage ESB future wind portfolio.

ESB currently has 17 wind farms in operation (392 MW) and long term plans for 1600MW in Ireland and Great Britain.

Julian Hobbs has been with Vestas for 5 years.

He heads the Service Sales Team responsible for the selling Service contracts for new and post warranty turbines within the Northern Europe Sales Business Unit.

Prior to Vestas he worked at Rolls-Royce for 15 years in a variety of commercial roles in various locations including India and the US.

His latter role with Rolls-Royce was as Sales Director for Major Airline accounts responsible for the sales of aero engines and long term service contracts.
