The company is understood to be in talks with the UK government about plugging the gap in the market left when Danish manufacturer closed its Isle of Wight plant last year.

The government wants to see £100 billion of offshore wind developments over, but has so been unsuccessful in attracting investors to supply the necessary equipment.

According to media reports, Gamesa is one of a number of leading manufacturers approached by the UK as possible investors. Others include Germany's Siemens, the General Electric from the US and Japan's Mitsubishi.

The Financial Times reports that Gamesa has confirmed its discussions with UK and will come to a decision within three to four months.
