Launching a low carbon energy strategy, environment minister Jane Davidson said Wales could generate twice as much power as it does now through wholly renewable sources by 2025, with wind accounting for a large proportion of this.
The strategy says that on- and offshore wind could respectively add 2 and 6GW to Wales' energy mix.
However, according to Windpower Monthly's Market Status report on wind energy growth around the world, Wales installed only 51.4MW over 2009 and is lagging behind all other UK countries.
As of 2009, Wales accounts for only 6% of the UK's wind energy capacity. Even Northern Ireland, which has a smaller population and land mass, manages to provide 9.5% of the total.
