Kema wins European offshore research deal

GERMANY: Dutch energy consulting company Kema has won a contract to carry out engineering studies for two North Sea offshore wind projects, both owned by German energy firm EnBW.

The projects, Hochhseewindpark Nordsee and He Dreiht, are to be sited about 85 kilometres north of the German island of Borkum and will each have 80 turbines.

Working with engineering company IMS Ingenieurgesellschaft and German wind energy institute DEWI, also involved in the projects, Kema will draw up and evaluate major aspects of the two projects, including wind station layout, selection of turbine type, foundation types, platform concepts, installation procedures and maritime logistics.

Together they could total 1.2GW, depending on the capacity of the turbines used and on the final wind station layout. EnBW seems to be anticipating that offshore turbines rated at 7.5MW each could be available.

The stations should be online by the end of 2015 and will then generate about 4.5TWh/year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 1.2 million households. 2015 is the year when rules under which transmission system operators pay for cable connections to offshore plants are set to change. Also, any offshore turbines online by 2015 qualify for an early-bird bonus payable on top of the basic payment for energy generated offshore.
