Wind Wire: United States - Wind power producer files lawsuit

US: NextEra Energy has filed a lawsuit seeking to reverse a decision that allows Iowa utility MidAmerican Energy to proceed with a plan to build 1GW of wind power. The decision by the Iowa Utility Board (IUB) followed months of deliberation by the IUB (Windpower Monthly, January 2010).

At issue is whether the build will give MidAmerican an unfair advantage by serving as a platform for market control over wind and transmission development in Iowa and neighbouring states. NextEra, the largest wind power producer in the US, owns 650MW of existing Iowa wind capacity. It has argued that the IUB should compel the utility to buy some of NextEra's assets or offer power purchase agreements to satisfy some of MidAmerican's ambitious plan for growth.
