The EUR70 million scheme, to be built by ENEOP 2, part of the Eolicas de Portugal consortium, will be located in the municipality of Tavira and consist of 29 2MW turbines. It will produce a total of 130GWh per year, enough to supply energy to more than 30,000 inhabitants. However, the developer has to comply with certain requirements to minimise impacts. These include the relocation of three planned wind turbines and the removal of power lines from a protected area designated for eagle nesting sites. The ENEOP-Eolicas de Portugal consortium was set up in 2005 after the Portuguese government invited bids to build wind power capacity in support of its goal of sourcing 39% of electricity generation from renewables by 2010. ENEOP won the first and largest phase of the bid attaining the rights to set up 1.2GW in new wind farms by 2013.
