Wind wire: Permit for Finngrunden

German wind developer WPD has applied to the Swedish government for a construction and operation permit for the Finngrunden offshore wind project, where 300 turbines at 5 MW each are planned.

It will be located in the Baltic Sea, about 40 kilometres from the mainland, east of the Swedish town of Gavle. Construction is expected to start in 2014. Once completed, electricity output should be around 5 TWh a year, enough to supply the annual needs of around 1.1 million households. Finngrunden is one of two Swedish offshore projects that WPD has at an advanced stage of planning, the other being the 265 MW Storgrundet wind farm. Meanwhile, its 660 MW Klocktarnan Swedish project is currently at an early planning stage.
