Altener and Save II granted higher budgets

Funding levels of the European Union Altener renewable energy support and Save II energy efficiency programs have been increased, following a compromise between the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers. Altener's budget between 2000 and 2006 will go up slightly to EUR 77 million, and Save II will receive EUR 66 million, reports European news service ENDS Environment Daily. The attempt to cut the budgets was otherwise led by Austria, Sweden, the UK and Germany. After months of showdown between the parliament and ministers council, a "conciliation council" was called in to help settle the dispute. The Altener program supports projects aimed at increasing the penetration of renewable energy supply in the EU.
