Although overall wind power potential in India is now put at 45,000 MW, the technical potential is limited to 13,000 MW, according to the Ministry for Non Conventional Energy Sources (MNES). Ministry director BML Garg says several initiatives are being planned by MNES to ensure this potential is fully exploited, including a wind atlas and wind resource assessment in hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. MNES will also research the feasibility of offshore wind projects, develop demonstration projects, initiate a scheme for export promotion and introduce financial assistance for retrofitting wind plant in states where old technology needs to be replaced to get higher capacity utilisation.
