Discussion paper on adapting to climate change in Victoria

Victoria's environment minister, John Thwaites, has released a discussion paper Adapting to Climate Change -- Enhancing Victoria's Capacity. "Even if we were able to stop emitting all greenhouse gases today, average temperatures would continue to rise for a number of decades," he says. "I don't think we are prepared." As well as more droughts and bush fires, energy demand is likely to increase significantly as temperature extremes become greater increasing demands on heating systems in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. One of the challenges ahead will be to meet the forecast increase in energy demand without increasing emissions. The Victorian government is conducting industry and community consultations on climate change across the state and says it will establish a policy framework to facilitate action emissions abatement.
