First phases of Zafarana

The first 17 wind turbines in the long awaited Zafarana wind farm in Egypt are now on-line. Erection of the remaining 33 units for the 30 MW wind farm will probably not be complete until late 2001, reports Nordex GmbH, the company supplying the turbines. The wind farm is being built under a joint contract with Danish overseas aid agency Danida and the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority.

The first 17, 600 kW wind turbines in the long awaited Zafarana wind farm in Egypt are now on-line. Erection of the remaining 33 units for the 30 MW wind farm will probably not be complete until late 2001, reports David Millar of Nordex GmbH, the German-Danish company supplying the turbines.

The wind farm is being built under a joint contract with Danish overseas aid agency Danida and the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA). Five countries were asked to tender projects of 60 MW each by NREA in conjunction with foreign aid (Windpower Monthly, July 1999).

Nordex has also erected 16 turbines at the same location in the first 35 MW phase of Germany's contribution to the Zafarana wind plant. The German contract is with development bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau. Millar says cabling and electrical work is underway, and the entire plant is expected to be on-line later this year.
