More than twice as many people as expected toured the Micon Wind Turbines (US) manufacturing plant in Minnesota on its open day last month. About 80 people including a dozen state legislators attended the half-day tour on January 17 to learn about production in the US of a Danish 600 kW turbine, the role of the turbine producer, the manufacturing jobs created and other economic development benefits, and how Minnesota is currently the leader in the US wind industry. The Hutchinson Manufacturing plant is the only place in the US where 600 kW Micon turbines are made. Sponsors of the tour were two committees of the Minnesota legislature, the Jobs Energy and Community development Committee of the state Senate and the Regulated Industries and Energy Committee of the state House of Representatives. Co-sponsors included Minnesotans for an Energy Efficient Economy, Energy Alley, Sustainable Energy for Economic development and the American Wind Energy Association. Minnesota has, for the meantime at least, become the centre of the US wind industry.
