German wind continues to break annual records. In 1999, 1568 MW of new capacity was installed, nearly twice as much as in 1998, also a record year. The 1999 wind additions even approached the amount of new conventional power station capacity brought on-line by power companies: 1938 MW according to a mid-year estimate by utility association Vereinigung Deutscher Elektrizitaetswerke (VDEW). This was largely made up of lignite power station units with some gas and very little other plant. Germany has now installed 7879 wind turbines which have a combined generating capacity of 4445 MW, according to statistics from the German wind energy institute, Deutsches Windenergie-Institut, equal to about 4.5% of Germany's total installed capacity.
