Kenetech Welsh projects dropped

ScottishPower has withdrawn from a joint venture with troubled California company Kenetech to develop three sites in north Wales. The sites were initially to have been developed by Kenetech in partnership with MANWEB -- the electricity utility for north Wales. However with the takeover of MANWEB by ScottishPower earlier this year, decision-making was transferred to Scotland. "We took over MANWEB's share of the joint development but felt that ultimately there was a question over the status of Kenetech," says ScottishPower's Alan Mortimer. "We were quite happy at the end of the day to unwind the joint venture." ScottishPower, which is vigorously progressing its own wind development plans, also claims there was a duplication of skills between itself and Kenetech.
