Kenetech Windpower may eventually build a 300 MW wind plant near Helix in Umatilla County, Oregon, officials have told the East Oregonian newspaper. The wind company is currently negotiating a 100 MW power purchase contract with the Portland General Electric utility. The negotiations were to have been finalised by May or June, but will now take until the autumn or later. Kenetech officials say that tax payments generated by the initial project, which will be 100 MW, would be $35-40 million over the next 30 years, according to the newspaper report.
The Sacramento Municipal Utility District's 5 MW wind farm in Solano County, California, is now on line. Construction started in April for the 17-turbine plant, using 33M-VS wind turbines from Kenetech Windpower. SMUD will add another 150 turbines to the development in two years if the first 5 MW performs to standard. The price tag for the whole project is $52 million. Kenetech is operating and maintaining the project.
