A new initiative has been launched in Cornwall to promote renewable energy in the county. The Renewable Energy Office for Cornwall (REOC) is a partnership between the private and public sectors funded jointly by British companies and the European regional development fund. It is Britain's first regional initiative set up to push renewable energy's role in stimulating local businesses and the local economy. As well as aiding the development of Cornwall's own resources it will showcase the services and goods provided by local companies, says the REOC's Hannah Danson. As a longer term aim, it hopes to attract renewable energy businesses to the county. Existing funding for the office, based at the Camborne School of Mines, runs out after just one year. However, Danson hopes the project will win European funding to allow it to continue beyond March 2001.
