One-off NEG Micon turbine failure blamed on subcontractor

The loss of an entire rotor and hub from an NEG Micon 500 kW turbine in Germany last month was the result of an extraordinary material failure following welding work by a sub-contractor, reports the machine's manufacturer. A rupture of the main shaft was "clearly induced by a repair procedure causing weakening" of the material and "inadequate quality of the repair itself," states NEG Micon. The repair was made during exchange of a main bearing about a year ago. The failed machine, sited in the Vogelsberg region in Hesse, is owned by Hessen Energie.
