LOW NI PRICES

Prices bid by wind energy project proponents into the Northern Ireland competition for renewables support would appear to be the lowest yet in the UK. Around 30 project proposers are believed to have applied for contracts under the second round of renewables support -- NI NFFO-2. Prices are understood to range from £0.037 to £0.042/kWh with an average well below £0.04/kWh. Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE), which has assessed the bids, confirms there has been a good response to the latest call for contracts. "We have been very pleased and surprised with the level of pricing," says NIE's Andy McCrea. Contracts are expected to be awarded at the end of March or in early April.
