Denmark

A year of good winds

Nineteen-ninety-eight was the windiest year in Denmark for the past three years. For the first time since 1994 the wind's energy content was 1.8% higher than the 100% in a statistically normal year. The around 2000 GWh produced by wind turbines in Denmark in 1998 saved the combustion of 457,832 tons of coal--enough to fill 15,261 freight train trucks stretching along 183 kilometres of railway track. Coal trucks are roughly 12 metres long and hold 30 tons. The environment was saved from more than two million tons of pollutants, most of which is the greenhouse gas CO2.
