Solar energy is proving more popular than wind power in Switzerland, with 10 MW of photovoltaic generation installed, compared with only a little more than 2 MW of wind. "Both the development potential and the lobby for solar energy is bigger, and the tourist industry has complained that wind turbines may disturb visitors," explains Robert Horbaty from the wind program at the Bundesamt für Energie, the federal energy office. Wilfried Blum at the Swiss utilities association agrees: "The problems lie in the aesthetics and impairment of the landscape. And some wind turbines could not be installed because the sites lay in the flying corridors of birds."
