VESTAS IN IOWA

The first Vestas V27 for the US outside California was due to be installed in Iowa in mid December. The Danish turbine is being installed for a plastics company, Schafer Systems, as a turn-key project in Adair near Des Moines, says Vestas-American Wind Technology Inc. Schafer Systems, which exports various plastics products internationally, is interested in investing in equipment and services that pay off in the long-term -- in the field of energy, items such as extra insulation and compact fluorescent bulbs, says operations manager Phil Littler. Schafer, which will provide operations and maintenance, says it chose Vestas in part because of its stability as a company. Schafer has a plant of about 30,000 square feet and employs some 35 people, estimates Paul White of Vestas-American. He says Schafer may eventually install more wind turbines.
