TELE COMPANY GOING RENEWABLE

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT), Japan's nationalised telecommunications company, has announced plans for a long term environmental programme leading to the year 2000 which will include an invitation for bids to tender wind power plant. In accordance with requests from the Japanese government to reduce CO2 levels, part of the programme is aimed at generating 100 million kWh of its annual power consumption from wind and solar sources. Its current use of such power is negligible, despite annual consumption of 3.4 billion kWh, an amount almost equal to the total power production of Kenya in 1994. The share of generating capacity between wind and solar has yet to be specified, but NTT says that land currently owned by the company would not be suitable for large wind power plant.
