Government campaign for more community-sized projects

Small and community-sized wind projects could be boosted under a £10 million government campaign to encourage homes, schools and communities to install their own renewable energy power stations. The "Clear Skies" initiative will distribute capital grants to residents in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, while a £3.7 million parallel program in Scotland is to be funded by the Scottish Executive. Both Clear Skies initiatives follow the recommendation of Prime Minister Tony Blair's Performance and Innovation Unit that support should be provided for "community and household schemes." Energy minister Brian Wilson says: "The Clear Skies initiative is an excellent opportunity for community groups and homeowners to bring forward useful projects. There is huge potential, for instance, in the encouragement of small wind generation -- proven technology for which there is a worldwide requirement."
