The energy committee of the majority Christian Democratic Union party's economic council is warning of contradictions in both European and German efforts at introducing more competition in the electricity market with the aim of lowering power prices. The committee says that if a draft Directive on Integrated Resource Planning (IRP), presented in November, becomes law its effect could well be the opposite of that desired. The energy committee points to experience in the United States where it claims introduction of IRP brought sharp price increases. It suggests the draft IRP Directive should be ditched.
